I’ve seen secretly photographed proposals on other photographers’ blogs, and have been equal parts terrified and excited that someone would ask me to shoot one. Terrified, because what if the bride-to-be sees me lurking in the bushes and I spill the surprise? Or what if I miss focus at the exact wrong second? Or what if the guy stands in totally the wrong spot and I can’t even get the girl’s reaction?? So when Chad emailed me and asked if I could meet him up at Greenpoint and secretly shoot him proposing to his girlfriend, Sarah, I think my heart almost stopped. I had told him the general location that I would like him to do it, and showed up 2o minutes early to find a good hiding spot. Turns out there isn’t actually a lot of cover near the beach, so I ended up hiding behind a tree 😉 I even dressed in black to attempt to blend in with the surroundings. Haha!! Who knew you would need to invest in camo when you became a photographer?!! I saw them drive into the parking lot, and start walking down the path. The wrong path. They were supposed to head to the beach, what were they doing on the path?? But Chad gently steered Sarah towards the water and my heart started beating again. They threw some rocks, chatted a bit, and then Chad grabbed both of Sarah’s hands and started talking to her. I don’t know what was said, but the romantic in me came up with a lot of possible scenarios 😉 Then he got down on one knee and asked the love of his life to marry him!! I was so honored to be a part of this proposal, and so excited that I can give these photos to them so that they will always remember how it happened. Chad & Sarah, I’m beyond happy for you both, and absolutely cannot wait for your wedding this summer!!
